The artist Alexander Calder

  • US-American sculptor of the modern era.
  • Most of his works can be classified as kinetic art.
  • One of the leading figures of object art and inventor of the mobile.

The US sculptor Alexander Calder who is known for his mobiles and hanging sculptures is one of the most influential representatives of object art. His works are permeated by curved lines, geometric contours and rounded corners. Their biomorphic forms reveal the influence of Joan Miró's Surrealism. Both artists maintained a lifelong exchange, which is reflected in a multitude of cross-references within the works of both artists. Calders work also shows his desire to combine abstraction and movement: He is known as the inventor of the mobile, but he also constructed sculptures powered by engines. One of his best-known works is Cirque Calder, a miniature mechanical circus made of wire with small figures and animals.

Alexander Calder was born on 22.07.1898 in Lawnton (Pennsylvania) into a family of artists. Both his grandfather, Alexander Milne Calder, and his father, Alexander Stirling Calder, were well-known sculptors. He entered the art world as a self-taught artist and studied engineering before joining George Luks and Boardman Robinson at the New York Art Students League from 1923 to 1926.

From 1924 to 1926, he worked as a draughtsman on a part-time basis until his studies took him to Paris in 1926, where he learned at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and occupied one of Arno Breker's studios. It was during this time that he began working on his later piece Cirque Calder and cultivated contacts with contemporary artists such as Piet Mondrian, Hans (Jean) Arp, Fernand Léger and Marcel Duchamp. In 1932 he became a member of the artists' group Abstraction-Création, which furthered his turn towards abstraction. A year later he moved back to Roxbury (Conneticut) in the USA. In 1952, Calder's first solo exhibition was held in Germany. He also participated in documenta 1 (1955), documenta II (1959) and documenta III (1964).

He died in New York on 11 November 1976. His estate, which includes a large private collection, has been looked after by the Calder Foundation since 1987.
