The artist Christopher Wool

  • Contemporary US painter and graphic artist.
  • Often works with stencil and spray techniques as well as with screen printing and paint roller.
  • Known for his word paintings with large letters and phrases with unusual word separation.

Christopher Wool was born on 16.09.1955 in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Chicago. In the 1980s he moved to New York to study at the New York Studio School in Manhattan. During this time, he joined an artist group around Jeff Koons, Haim Steinbach and Robert Gober and socialised with, among others, the artists Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The latter is considered one of those who established graffiti painting in the art world in the 1970s and 80s, and Wool also began using stencil and spray techniques in the 1980s.

Later he switched to silkscreen and paint rollers, the latter he also used for his first ornamental paintings. Wool became known to a large audience with his word paintings. These are paintings on which large letters are applied with stencils to form words and parts of sentences.

In addition to the unusual punctuation, some of which is missing, the parts of sentences that he paints, sprays on or stencils on form a clear contrast due to their black colour on a white background.

Since the late 1980s, his work has been appreciated by numerous museums and galleries and his white-primed aluminium panels, on which he applies the word paintings, have been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), the Museum Ludwig (Cologne), the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (Paris) and the Guggenheim Museum (New York), among others. In 1989 he was represented at the Whitney Biennial, and in 1992 at documenta IX in Kassel. Christopher Wool still lives and works in New York with his wife, the German painter Charline von Heyl.
