The artist Jonas Wood

  • Contemporary US artist with influences from Pop Art and Cubism.
  • Known for his depictions of interiors, often based on photographic models.
  • First solo show in 2006, through which he was discovered by artist Mark Grotjahn.

Jonas Wood, born 1977 in Boston, is an American contemporary artist who is influenced by Henri Matisse, Alex Katz and David Hockney. He creates collages, drawings and photographs in the style of Pop Art as well as Cubism. His paintings mostly show figurative forms of representation such as abstract portraits, still lifes or interiors, while now and then he also works alone with geometric forms.

Wood came into contact with fine art at an early age, for example through his grandfather's art collection, which included works by important artists such as Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol and Alexander Calder. He initially studied psychology at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, but soon turned to studying art at the University of Washington, where he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 2002.

During his studies, Wood mainly used photographs as the basis for his work - he made photo collages or »translated« these photographs into drawings and later into paintings. This working technique continues to the present day. For example, he uses simple photographs of interiors as models for his »two-dimensional« interpretations of three-dimensional spaces in the style of contemporary Pop Art.

His numerous illustrations of these rooms, often lush with indoor plants, were described by the Huffington Post in 2013 as a successful balancing act »between an incredible sharpness of modernity« and the »familiar feeling of home«.

After graduating, Wood moved to Los Angeles, where he still lives and shares a studio with his wife and (ceramic) artist Shio Kusaka. The two often work together and design joint art projects - for example, Kusaka's ceramic motifs appear in Wood's paintings and vice versa. Wood had his first solo exhibition in 2006 at the Black Dragon Society gallery in Los Angeles, where he was discovered by artist Mark Grotjahn. One year later, his works were then shown as part of a solo show at the Anton Kern Gallery in New York.

Further solo exhibitions followed at the Dallas Museum of Art (2019), the Museum Voorlinden, the Lever House in New York (2014) and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (2010). Meanwhile, his works are part of the collections of established museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in New York or the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
