The artist John Atkinson Grimshaw

  • English painter of the Victorian period.
  • Achieved commercial fame as a self-taught painter of atmospheric night views.
  • Fell into obscurity after his death until the late 20th century.

John Atkinson Grimshaw was an English Victorian painter. He was born in Leeds in 1836 and taught himself to paint by copying. Grimshaw first worked as a railway clerk until 1861, when he turned exclusively to painting, much to the chagrin of his parents, who disapproved of this way of life. Grimshaw began by painting still lifes. He copied the dead birds, flowers, and fruit of his English colleague William Henry Hunts (1790-1864).

Gradually, he produced more and more commissioned works and developed his distinctive style for which he is known today: atmospheric, detailed views of cities and harbors at night or dusk create striking contrasts with the cobblestones glistening with moisture.

In addition to the prominent nocturnal moments, his oeuvre also includes portraits, interiors, and depictions of fairies. The meticulous attention to detail in Grimshaw's paintings is particularly striking: individual elements in vibrant colors stand out in the darkness of the industrial cityscape. Grimshaw's nocturnal scenes of gas-lit streets, wet sidewalks, and foggy atmosphere became his trademark and earned him great renown in his day.

He began exhibiting his paintings in London in 1862. These included the Royal Academy of Arts and other prestigious venues. Grimshaw soon became a commercial painter, which enabled him and his family to live in a villa on the outskirts of Leeds. He had a total of 15 children, only six of whom survived. Some of them also worked as painters, such as his sons Arthur Edmund (1864-1913) and Louis H. (1870-1944).

Grimshaw died of cancer in 1893 at the age of 57. After his death, the fame of his work steadily declined. It was not until the late 20th century that his art was rediscovered. Early paintings were signed  »J.A. Grimshaw«, but from 1867 he decided to use the signature »Atkinson Grimshaw«.

Jahrhundert in Vergessenheit.
