The artist Dana Schutz

  • Contemporary US artist (*1976).
  • Known for grotesque and alienated depictions of the body in a sober painting style.
  • Triggered controversy with »Open Casket« at the 2017 Whitney Biennial.

Dana Schutz's works portray the human body: grotesque postures and shapes add up with her sober painting style to create a surrealist character. The contemporary artist was born in 1976 in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan - she lives and works in New York.

In the late 1990s, she was enrolled at the Cleveland Institute of Art and spent a semester abroad in England, where she attended the Norwich School of Art and Design. In 1999, she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and completed her bachelor's degree in 2000 after returning to Cleveland. In 2002, she earned her master's degree from Columbia University in New York City.

That same year, she made her debut with the exhibition Frank from Observation (2002) at LFL Gallery (then Zach Feuer Gallery). In it, she focused on Frank, a character of her own invention: a pink, middle-aged male whom she fakes as the »last man on earth.«

Schutz's work thrives on fictional subjects and imaginary, sometimes uncomfortable situations. She herself explained to Bomb Magazine in 2006 how she arrives at the motifs: »I respond to what I think is happening in the world. The hypotheticals in the paintings can act as surrogates or narratives for phenomena that I feel are happening in culture. [...] I construct the paintings as I go along.«

Schutz's work Open Casket (2016) sparked controversy at the 2017 Whitney Biennial. It depicts the murdered and mutilated Emmett Till, who was killed in 1955 at the age of 14 for racist reasons. The work is based on a newspaper photograph that showed the body with the coffin open - Till's mother had insisted on it to show what the perpetrators did to her son.

Protesters accused Schutz of cultural appropriation and profiling Black suffering. Her former dealer, Zach Feuer, advised her to remove the work from the biennial. Schutz subsequently kept the work, saying it was never intended for sale.

More recently, Schutz's work 2022 could be seen in the Women Painting Women exhibition at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The painting Elevator (2017) changed hands at a Christie's auction house sale in December 2020 for around 5.3 million euros (about $5.5 million) - the previous record for the artist.
