The artist Amoako Boafo

  • Contemporary painter from Ghana.
  • Known for his portraits, mostly on monochrome backgrounds.
  • His works exclusively depict black people.

The Ghanaian painter Amoako Boafo was born in Accra in 1984 and is known for his figurative art, usually on monochrome backgrounds. Boafo studied at the Ghanatta College of Art and Design in Accra between 2004 and 2007. Six years later, he moved to Austria, where he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 2014. Here, art-makers such as Ashley Hans Scheirl and Kirsi Mikkola were among his teachers. During this time, he dealt a lot with works of 20th century Viennese Modernism as well as European Art Nouveau. Above all, the works of the painters Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt had a lasting influence on him.

In 2018, Boafo came to the attention of US artist Kehinde Wiley via the social media platform Instagram. He bought one of his artworks and made connections with various galleries. Among other things, this led to Boafo's solo exhibition I See Me at Roberts Projects in Los Angeles. Since then, at the latest, he has been causing a stir internationally.

In 2019, he was already one of the most sought-after artists at Art Basel Miami Beach. At the beginning of 2020, his painting The Lemon Bathing Suit achieved a value of 813,000 euros at an auction by the Phillips auction house. In the same year, Boafo's works served as a model for the Dior Men summer collection. His works are now part of the collections of the Guggenheim Museum (New York), the CCS Bard College Museum of Art (New York), the Rubell Museum (Miami) and the Albertina Museum Vienna.

Boafo portrays exclusively black people, whom he inserts into colourful backgrounds. He produces his figurative portraits with oil paint in front of colour surfaces and abstract interiors. While he paints the faces and hands of his figures directly onto the canvas with his bare fingers, other pictorial components are created with expressive brushstrokes. His paintings are often described as virtuosic, intense and sensual. They deal with themes such as the representation of black people, vulnerability, pride and self-determination.

Dies führte unter anderem zu Boafos Einzelausstellung I See Me bei Roberts Projects in Los Angeles.

Amoako Boafo in a nutshell

Amoako Boafo is known for his colorful and expressive paintings, often portraying black subjects with bold brushstrokes and vivid hues. His work is characterized by a distinctive style that combines a realistic depiction of the subject with elements of abstraction and gestural mark-making.

One of the key aspects of Boafo's work is his focus on portraying black subjects with dignity and respect, often challenging the historical and contemporary marginalization of black people in art and society. His work often depicts his subjects with a sense of pride and strength, emphasizing their individuality and humanity. Boafo employs a bold and vibrant palette, using intense hues to create a sense of energy and vitality in his paintings. He often juxtaposes bright colors with dark backgrounds, creating a striking contrast that further emphasizes the power and presence of his subjects.

Boafo's works have been in great demand for several years. Most of them fetched a price between $100,000 and $500,000 at auctions. More than 10 paintings cost up to $1,000,000 and few exceeded the million mark. His most expensive work through February 2023 is Hands Up (2018), which cost about $3.4 million.

This is difficult to estimate and the value is subject to constant change and growth. As of February 2023, his net worth is estimated to be between $100,000 and $1,000,000.

Amoako Boafo quotes

»I want to paint people who have had the same experiences as me. I want to see myself and have people see themselves in me.«
»My paintings are for documenting the people around me and where I am, but I also think they challenge the notion of how people think about blackness.«
»[W]hen I was growing up, we did copies of cartoons. Some childhood friends and I would compete and see who copied the cartoon world, and we’d draw. And that’s it. That’s how I started.«
