The artist Bridget Tichenor

  • British Surrealist painter.
  • Lived in Mexico from the 1950s.
  • Her paintings embody female strength and individuality.

Bridget Bate Tichenor was a British artist best known for her vivid and expressive paintings. She was born in Paris in 1917 but grew up in England. In London, she studied art at the Slade School of Fine Art. Tichenor later moved to Paris, where she was strongly influenced by the avant-garde art scene of the time. From 1939 she lived in New York, moving to Mexico after the Second World War.

Tichenor's work is characterised by her bold colours and energetic brushstrokes. She often used a variety of media, including oil paint, watercolour and gouache, to bring depth and texture to her paintings. Tichenor was also a talented printmaker and produced numerous etchings and lithographs during her career.

She exhibited her paintings in Europe and the USA, and today they are in numerous public and private collections around the world. Tichenor was particularly known for her portraits, which often depicted independent and strong women. Her subjects ranged from society ladies to working class women; her paintings are considered a celebration of female strength and individuality.

Tichenor died in Mexico City in 1990. She left behind some 200 oil paintings, which are sought after by collectors for their masterful technique and esoteric content. In 2022, works by Tichenor were shown in the main exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The painter also worked as a model in her younger years. In the late 1930s she was active in Paris and in New York, where artists such as Man Ray and Irving Penn photographed her.

Tichenor starb 1990 in Mexiko-Stadt.

Bridget Tichenor in a nutshell

In Paris, Giorgio di Chirico taught her to paint and draw. In addition, Leonor Fini, a friend of Tichenor's mother, had a great influence on the young artist.

Almost all the works in Tichenor's oeuvre date from the time after she moved to Mexico. There she kept in touch with Surrealist painters such as Leonora Carrington and Alice Rahon. Tichenor combined European surrealist approaches with pre-Columbian mythologies, which she executed in outdated tempera technique.

In October 1949, Irving Penn photographed The Tarot Reader with Tichenor and Jean Patchett. A print of the photograph is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
