The artist George Condo

  • Postmodern US-American painter.
  • Known for his grotesque portraits and figures with "psychological cubist" influences.
  • Adorned an Hermès handbag that rapper Kanye West bought for his wife Kim Kardashian.

George Condo, born 1957 in Concord, New Hampshire, is a contemporary US painter of postmodern art. Condo's paintings show mostly exaggerated faces, grotesque to satirical portraits and figures with bulging eyes, bulging cheeks and displaced mouths or missing noses. They leave an almost carnivalesque impression and stand out because of their cubist elements.

Condo himself therefore calls his style »psychological cubism« - in it he underlines and satirises the human imperfections that otherwise give way to the beauty of painting. Others describe his work as surrealist. Even Condo's most abstract works, such as his Internal Space (2005), which features a formation of geometric shapes in the centre, address the aforementioned weaknesses by revealing the extremes of the human psyche.

Condo has lived in New York since the 1980s. He has been friends with popular artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring and has worked together with the writer William S. Burroughs and the poet Allen Ginsberg. He made a name for himself because he attracted the attention of rapper Kanye West. He designed the cover for the album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and in 2013 West gave his likewise celebrity partner Kim Kardashian an Hermès handbag decorated by Condo for Christmas.

Especially in the 2010s, a number of solo exhibitions were dedicated to Condo. In 2011 and 2012, his works were shown as part of the exhibition George Condo: Mental States at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt. In 2013, he was honoured with an exhibition at Galerie Sprüth Magers in Berlin and in 2016 with one at Museum Berggruen, also in Berlin.

Der Künstler George Condo

  • Postmoderner US-amerikanischer Maler.

Condo lebt seit den 1980er-Jahren in New York.
