The artist Salman Toor

  • Pakistani-American contemporary artist of figurative painting.
  • Invokes experiences of his queer, diasporic identity with his paintings.
  • »Girl and Boy with Driver« (2013) fetched five times its estimate at auction in 2022.

Salman Toor's figurative works are often based on his own experiences. The contemporary artist combines academic techniques with a quick, sketchy style. He provides intimate glimpses into the lives of young, queer, brown men whose lives take place between New York City and South Asia. He places them sometimes in public, sometimes in private spaces, and also brings to the screen the role of modern technology in their lives.

Toor's coloration includes bright, saturated colors. His penchant for greens is striking - they give his works their »nocturnal« quality. Toor said in a 2020 interview with the Whitney Museum that he drew inspiration from Pakistani advertising. Later, he added to his sources styles of the great masters - Baroque, Neoclassical and Rococo.

He adds fantastic elements to the idealized scenarios in a nocturnal mood, in which he has the groups of friends made up of queer young men dancing or playing with puppies. His characters are free of constraints. However, some of his motifs also play out on a passive, melancholic, vulnerable, or even alienated level that views his experience as a queer, diasporic identity.

Salman Toor was born in 1983 in Lahore, Pakistan, where he attended Aitchison College. He came to the United States for his undergraduate studies at Ohio Wesleyan University. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 2006, he transferred to Pratt Institute in New York, completing his Master's degree in 2009. The artist is among the loose LGBTQ group that insiders sometimes refer to as the New Queer Intimists. In addition to Toor, they include colleagues such as Louis Fratino and Anthony Cudahy.

Toor's first solo museum exhibition was held by the Whitney Museum in 2020/21, titled Salman Toor: How Will I Know. The Baltimore Museum of Art showed some of his paintings in No Ordinary Love in 2022, where it juxtaposed those of Old Masters. The exhibition moves on to the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University in Boston in 2023. Toor made his auction debut on October 20 at Phillips in London, with Aashiana (Hearth and Home) fetching double its estimate at £138,600. Many more auctions followed with results in the upper 100,000s.

  • »Girl and Boy with Driver« (2013) erzielte 2022 das Fünffache des Schätzpreises.

Toors erste museale Soloausstellung veranstaltete das Whitney Museum 2020/21 unter dem Titel Salman Toor: How will I know. Einige seiner Gemälde zeigte das Baltimore Museum of Art 2022 in No Ordinary Love, wo es denen alter Meister gegenüberstand.
