The artist Shirin Neshat

  • Contemporary Iranian artist whose work is influenced by the Islamic Revolution.
  • Awarded prize at the 48th Venice Biennale & directing prize at the 66th Venice Film Festival.
  • Now lives in New York and Berlin and devotes herself primarily to the medium of film.

Shirin Neshat, born 26 March 1957 in Qazvin, Iran, is an artist, filmmaker and photographer. She left Iran in 1979 shortly before the Islamic Revolution to study in the USA. The central theme of her art is the role of women in the value system of Islamic communities. The political changes after the revolution in Iran have had a great influence on her work. After living in the USA for eleven years, she returned to Iran. There, between 1993 and 1997, she made a series of works called Women of Allah, which is considered the starting point of her artistic career.

Emotionally charged by the new political situation, she deals in this series of photographs with the theme of the contradictory changes in the country and the complex female identities that emerge from them. The black-and-white photographs show partly armed women, all wrapped in a chador, whose bare hands or faces are covered with handwritten lyrical texts by contemporary Iranian women poets. The people depicted symbolise what Neshat perceives as Iran's situation after the Islamic Revolution "divided into black and white" and combine her own contradictory cultural influences.

For this reason, she also produces her works predominantly in black and white. With the video installation Turbulent (1998), Neshat presented her first cinematic work, for which she received the International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999. The installation consists of two (black and white) short films projected in parallel on two opposite walls. Both show the same scene: a theatre hall from the perspective of a male and a female singer. On the male artist's side, the hall is full to bursting, while on the female artist's side it remains empty.

The medium of film was later to play a more important role in Neshat's career than her photographic art: in 2009, she released her first feature film Women without Men, for which she was awarded the directing prize at the 66th Venice Film Festival. Neshat studied at the University of California at Berkeley, where she earned a bachelor's degree in performing arts and a master's degree in liberal arts. Today she lives and works in New York and Berlin. The world's renowned museums have already honoured her with exhibitions and retrospectives.
