The artist Cindy Sherman

  • US American photographic artist based in New York.
  • Portrays and stages herself to depict the social construct of femininity.
  • Often associated with the Pictures Generation group of artists.

Cynthia "Cindy" Morris Sherman, born 19 January 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, is an American photographic artist known for her self-portraits in which she critically examines the societal feminine stereotype. In her photos, she transforms her appearance and thus slips into different (female) gender roles, thus exaggerating stereotypical appearances.

From 1970 to 1980, she produced her important Untitled Film Stills series, consisting of black-and-white photographs for which she posed, always looking away from the camera, according to various clichés prevalent at the time. These role models are based, for example, on Hollywood films or advertising topoi. She embodied figures such as the "office girl", "the housewife" or "the sexpot", thus making the social construct of femininity the central theme of her works.

Sherman has lived in New York since the end of the 1970s and continues her artistic work in the form of photographic self-dramatisation to this day. Meanwhile, her disguises have become increasingly elaborate and her original medium of black-and-white photography has given way to large-format colour photography.

Sherman is often attributed to the so-called Pictures Generation. This is a loose group of artists who had their creative circle mainly in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. The group also included well-known (conceptual) artists such as Sherrie Levine and Robert Longo.

Die Künstlerin Cindy Sherman

  • US-amerikanische Fotokünstlerin mit Schaffensschwerpunkt in New York.
