Brian Donnelly, better known by his stage name KAWS, was born on 4 November 1974 in Jersey City (New Jersey) and is a US artist and designer. In 1990, he moved to New York City to study and initially became known as a graffiti artist under the name KAWS, painting over advertisements on bus stops, billboards and telephone booths and reinterpreting them in an ironic way. In addition to New York, he later did this in other major cities such as Berlin, Paris and Tokyo. In 1996, he graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and then worked briefly as a freelance animator. In 1999, he created his first designer toy in cooperation with the Japanese company Bounty Hunter: a vinyl figure inspired by Mickey Mouse with crossed eyes and the name »Companion«. The face with the characteristic crosses in its eyes is also a recurring motif in later works and paintings.
KAWS' contemporary pop art earned him various collaborations with renowned brands and personalities. In 2013, for example, he redesigned the Moonman - the trophy of the MTV Video Music Awards, created Air Force 1 shoe models for NIKE together with 17 other designers and designed record covers for Towa Tei and Kanye West, among others. In May 2017, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City released a limited edition of KAWS' companion action figure, after which the museum's online shop collapsed due to an unprecedented influx of visitors.
In April 2019, KAWS' painting The Kaws Album (2005) sold at Sotheby's in Hong Kong for the equivalent of US$14.7 million, a record for the artist at the time. KAW's more recent paintings on Shaped Canvas show mainly cartoonesque scenes and figures that are usually depicted in a shy or helpless pose. In the process, he deconstructs the appropriated originals into abstraction. Because of his cross-market appeal and his ability to blur the boundaries of art and commerce, he has been compared to artists such as Andy Warhol. KAWS' work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums and his work is part of the collections of the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Rosenblum Collection (Paris).
