The artist Genieve Figgis

  • Contemporary Irish artist known for her macabre acrylic paintings.
  • Often reinterprets 17th and 18th century artworks with impasto, melting paint.
  • Started her artistic career via the social media platform Twitter.

Genieve Figgis, born 1972 in Dublin, is a contemporary Irish artist known for her acrylic paintings of hauntingly macabre motifs in rich, vibrant and sometimes sombre colours. She was discovered in 2014 by US artist Richard Prince by regularly sharing her pieces on the social network Twitter.

Prince then introduced her to the New York art scene, where her first solo show took place in 2014 at the Harper's Books Inc. gallery in East Hampton. Previously, her work had been exhibited solo in London at Transition Gallery (2014) and in Dublin at Talbot Gallery (2013). In 2015, she was signed by the internationally represented Almine Rech Gallery.

Her works are situated between figurative and abstract art - the pastose acrylic canvases often depict reproductions of photographs or paintings from the Age of Rococo as well as the Victorian era; they show people with missing faces or dissolving contours. Figgis creates her characteristic style by letting the paint drip onto the canvas, thus leaving part of the work to gravity as well as to the deliberate oversaturation of colour.

The Flaunt Magazine describes her art in 2016 as »classic yet extremely contemporary« and as if the art she references is viewed through a macabre filter that melts everything. One of her more prominent works is a reinterpretation of Leda and the Swan by the French 18th-century painter François Boucher, which she fashioned in 2018. Her version reinvents the original romantic-idyllic scene and adds a touch of black humour and obscenity.

Due to her Irish origins, Figgis was initially influenced mainly by the strict order of the Catholic Church as well as the picturesque landscapes of Ireland. She herself believes in a spiritual connection to nature, which is also reflected in her vivid use of colour.

Figgis graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Gorey School of Art in Wexford in 2006 and then continued with a Master of Fine Arts from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin in 2012.
