The artist Robert Mapplethorpe

  • US photographer who caused controversy worldwide with explicit content.
  • Was involved with musician Patti Smith and photographed the cover of her debut album.
  • Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center was sued due to a retrospective dedicated to him.

Robert Mapplethorp, born on 04.11.1946 in Floral Park, New York, died 09.03.1989 in Boston, was a photographer and artist who was remembered above all by the US art scene for his provocative images. Mapplethorpe also produced black-and-white portraits and still lifes, contrary to his inherent obscene reputation, and used sophisticated photographic printing techniques such as heliogravure and Cibachrome. Mapplethorp attended the Pratt Institute in New York City.

At that time he came into contact with the 1968 movement as well as with musician Patti Smith, with whom he soon became involved and for whom he later designed the cover of her debut album Horses. After graduating, he quickly became interested in photography – in the 1970s, for example, he experimented with the Polaroid camera. He was inspired by the works of Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp and initially created collages from Polaroid photos and text clippings.

After he had developed further photographically, he conceived his internationally controversial X-Portfolio– it comprises a series of black-and-white photographs with explicit content from the New York sadomasochistic scene. There is no question that Mapplethorp's art was polarising: it led to regular protests by conservative groups against public funding of his work, which in turn triggered debates about art censorship in the scene, while at the same time the value of his works rose to as much as half a million US dollars when his infection with the HI virus became public in 1988.

After Mapplethorpe died of AIDS in 1989 at the age of 42, the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him in 1990 entitled The Perfect Mind, in which the X-portfolio in question was shown. The centre and the director at the time were then sued in vain– the events served as the basis for the feature film Dirty Pictures in 2000.

Robert Mapplethorp,  geb. am 04.11.1946 in Floral Park, New York, gest.
