Fragments of Time, Figures of Memory

Gerda Van Damme is a Belgian artist working across painting, installation, video and digital media. Her practice explores memory, childhood and the passage of time. Avoiding decorative nostalgia, she investigates the unsettling spaces where the intimate becomes universal. Her figurative works often draw on family archives, reinterpreting personal imagery with emotional precision and a contemporary sensibility. Exhibited internationally—from Berlin to the Arsenale in Venice, and from Granada, Almería and Córdoba to New York—her work has been recognised in several juried competitions and supported by cultural institutions in Belgium. Through meticulous technique and a focus on psychological depth, Van Damme creates images that reflect on filiation, memory, destiny (or its absence), the absurdity of existence and the unresolved questions that shape human experience.
