Boris Sveshnikov spent over eight years in a labor camp having been falsely convicted of engaging in terrorist activity at the age 19. He felled trees and dug trenches until a friend managed to get him a job as a night watchman in a carpentry workshop. His pen and ink drawings from this period are both incredibly skillful and haunting, with lonely figures in barren landscapes. Though elements of Gulag life are identifiable, comical and mysterious

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Scene At The Gate by Boris Sveshnikov was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in October 2018. The price achieved of USD 688.00 (€ 607.13) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as USD 600.00 – 800.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Boris Sveshnikov achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Russian Love In Winter, Circa Early 1950S in April 2008 with an auction result of USD 181,000.00 (€ 116,264.13).
