engraving, 1589, on sturdy laid paper, watermark Coat-of-Arms with Three Compasses (Briquet 1164, dated 1575), a very fine impression of this rare, large print, first state (of two), trimmed inside the platemark but retaining a fillet of blank paper outside the borderline, a few skilfully repaired paper splits along the usual horizontal central fold, some other unobtrusively repaired tears and paper splits

In the Old Master Prints auction, the work The Large Hercules sold for USD 60,000.00 (€ 55,586.44) - well above the upper estimate of USD 30,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Hendrick Goltzius achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Jupiter And Antiope in January 2010 with an auction result of USD 6,802,500.00 (€ 4,904,470.08).

Dieses Kunstwerk von Hendrick Goltzius erzielte im Januar 2017 bei Christies in New York einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Old Master Prints wurde die Arbeit The Large Hercules für USD 60.000,00 (€ 55.586,44) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von USD 30.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Hendrick Goltzius erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Jupiter And Antiope im Januar 2010 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 6.802.500,00 (€ 4.904.470,08).
