Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A shepherd with his sheep by a ruined aquaduct on the Roman Campagna by Holger Hvitfeldt Jerichau was auctioned at Christies in London in September 2001, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 1,200.00 – 1,800.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 1,175.00 (€ 1,897.12). Admittedly, works by Holger Hvitfeldt Jerichau have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work View of Pompeii towards Mount Vesuvius with an artist by the easel in the foreground in March this year with an auction result of DKK 65,000.00 (€ 8,722.87).
