Jacques Barraband (1767/8-1809)
Mauritius Parakeet (Plate no. 39, Perruche à Double Collier, Psittacula echo Sheet size 190 x 120 inches [500 x 315mm.])
As the name suggests this Parakeet is now restricted to Mauritius but was perhaps formerly resident on Réunion. It is one of the world's most endangered birds with the wild population being limited to between 15 and 20 birds in 1991. [With:]
Brown-throated Conure (Plate no. 37, Seconde varieté de la Peruche à front jaune, Aratinga pertinax. Sheet size 19¾ x 120 inches [502 x 320mm.])
A member of a group of 14 species or sub-species from the north of South America, central America and some Caribbean islands. Generally common, this Conure is usually found in flocks of from between 4 to 20 birds and often associates with the Yellow-crowned Amazon. (2)

Auction result well in line with expectations

The work Mauritius Parakeet (Plate no. 39, Perruche à Double Collier, Psittacula echo Sheet size 190 x 120 inches 500 x 315mm.) by Jacques Barraband was sold in the NATURAL HISTORY auction at Christies in London in June 2001. The price achieved of GBP 3,525.00 (€ 5,855.73) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Jacques Barraband achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Troisième variété du perroquet cendré - The Grey Parrot - Psittacus erithacus. in June 2000 with an auction result of GBP 91,750.00 (€ 145,435.04).
