Acquired directly from the artist, circa 1950s - early 1960s | Chandrakala Lal became a friend and patron of Jamini Roy during the 1950s when she lived in Calcutta with her husband Shiv Lal. Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Jamini Roy achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in May 2016. In the South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art auction, the work Untitled (Santhal Woman Standing in a Stream) sold for GBP 35,000.00 (€ 45,671.31) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 12,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Jamini Roy achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Untitled (Dralha) in September last year with an auction result of USD 579,600.00 (€ 592,456.30).
