Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Joseph Mallord William Turner achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in December 2021. In the Old Masters Evening Sale auction, the work Cilgerran Castle, Wales sold for GBP 1,043,500.00 (€ 1,244,676.62) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 500,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Joseph Mallord William Turner achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Rome, From Mount Aventine in December 2014 with an auction result of GBP 30,322,500.00 (€ 39,035,113.21).
