In December 2008 a collector was able to acquire the work The American brig Argus engaging His Majesty's sloop Pelican in British waters, 14th August 1813 by Montague Dawson for USD 170,500.00 (€ 122,494.43). This price was achieved in the auction Maritime Art at Christies in New York and was even below the estimate range of USD 200,000.00 – 300,000.00 set by the auction house. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Montague Dawson - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work The action between H.M.S. Shannon and the U.S.S. Chesapeake,1st June 1813, which sold at auction in February 2006 for USD 486,400.00 (€ 407,882.60).
