Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Victoria Illustrated, 1857: complete collection of forty-five engraved plates and title, published by Sands & Kenny, Melbourne & Sydney, without binding by Samuel Thomas Gill was auctioned at Christies in London in September 2001, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 500.00 – 800.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 470.00 (€ 758.85). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Samuel Thomas Gill achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Princes Bridge, Melbourne, c.1854 in November 2020 with an auction result of AUD 79,950.00 (€ 66,914.96).
