RUSSIAN, EARLY 17TH CENTURY
In the centre of the composition the "Preparation of the Throne" with the cross displayed prominently, Christ in a round mandorla above, flanked by his Mother and John the Baptist in supplication, the Old Testament Trinity in a circular glory at the top, flanked by the celestial forces, the crowds of Just people in several registers according to their hierarchy, the Devil represented as a serpent in the lower part, a fiery depiction of Hell at the right bottom corner, the over-sized demon restraining the sinners with chains, the minutely detailed figures represented with colourful garments, the gold leaf of the background now partially flaked off
