Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work A three-masted barque reefed-down in heavy weather by Vilhelm Melbye was auctioned at Christies in London in May 2011, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 700.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 2,750.00 (€ 3,144.63). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Vilhelm Melbye achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A Spanish felucca, British warships and other shipping in the Mediterranean off Gibraltar in May 2012 with an auction result of GBP 43,250.00 (€ 53,887.60).
