Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Waves crashing on a rocky coastline by Vilhelm Melbye was sold in the Maritime Art auction at Christies in London in November 2010. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 1,000.00 – 1,500.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 1,125.00 (€ 1,344.37) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Vilhelm Melbye achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A Spanish felucca, British warships and other shipping in the Mediterranean off Gibraltar in May 2012 with an auction result of GBP 43,250.00 (€ 53,887.60).
