The artist Chu Teh-Chun

  • Chinese-French abstract painter.
  • Known for his mix of traditional Chinese painting techniques and Western abstract art.
  • First Frenchman of Chinese origin to be elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.

Chu Teh-Chun (also Zhu Dequn) was born on October 24, 1920 in Baitu, China and was a Chinese-French abstract painter. He was known for his pioneering style that combined traditional Chinese painting techniques with Western abstract art. In 1935, Chu Teh-Chun enrolled at the National School of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art) in Hangzhou, China, and studied Chinese painting with  Pan Tianshou and Western art with Fang Ganmin and Wu Dayu. He and fellow students Wu Guanzhong and Zao Wou-Ki were called the »Three Musketeers of Chinese modernist artists trained in China and France«.

Four years after graduating in 1941, Chu became a faculty member at the architecture department of the National Central University in Nanjing, China, and moved to Taiwan in 1949, where he taught Western-style painting at the National Taiwan Normal University. In 1955, he moved to Paris, where he spent the rest of his life, becoming a French citizen in 1980. In April 1956, Chu painted a portrait of his wife Tung Ching-Chao in oil on canvas, after which his career became increasingly successful. An exhibition of his works at the Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh) in 1964 also raised his profile internationally.

Inspired by the abstract landscape paintings of Nicolas de Staël, his earlier figurative style dwindled and he developed a unique style with broad brushstrokes and bold color. This was reminiscent of Chinese calligraphy, the landscapes he had seen in his childhood, and abstract experiments in New York and Western Europe. However, although his work retains the stylistic freedom of mid-century movements such as Informel and Abstract Expressionism, Chu always maintained the strict technical brushwork he had learned as a student in China.

In late 1997, Chu became the first Frenchman of Chinese origin to be elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in France, and in 2001 was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques and Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. Chu Teh-Chun passed away in Paris on March 26, 2014 at the age of 93 . His paintings are now in the collections of more than 50 museums around the world. In 2017, his family created The CHU Teh-Chun Foundation, dedicated to the collection, exhibition, preservation and interpretation of the art and archives of the famous French-Chinese artist.
