The artist Zao Wou-Ki

Born on 13.02.1920 or 1921 in Beijing (China), the painter Zao Wou-Ki learned Chinese calligraphy in his childhood. As early as 1935, he began his studies at the Academy of Arts in Hangzhou, majoring in Chinese and Western painting. The works of Picasso, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Paul Klee had a lasting influence on him. After graduating, he worked as a professor at the same art academy from 1941 to 1947 and exhibited his paintings at a first solo show. Impressed by European modernism, Wou-Ki moved to Paris in 1947, became Alberto Giacometti's neighbour and took courses in painting with Othon Friesz. He also cultivated contacts with Henri Michaux, Joan Miró, Joan Mitchell, Maria Elena Vieira da Silva, Pierre Soulages and Sam Francis.

In 1949, Wou-Ki's first Paris solo exhibition took place at the Galerie Creuze, followed by various other exhibitions throughout Europe in the years that ensued. In 1964 he was granted French citizenship, and a year later his first major retrospective was shown at the Museum Folkwang in Essen. Several trips to China in the 1970s resulted in a series of ink paintings in the Chinese tradition. In addition, his friendships with Henri Michaux and André Malraux brought him various jobs for illustration projects. In 1983, his work was recognised in the People's Republic of China and some of his works were exhibited in the Chinese National Museum (Beijing).

In the 1990s and 2000s, Wou-Ki was awarded several honorary doctorates and awards, including the Praemium Imperiale of the Imperial House of Japan (1994). Furthermore, his paintings were part of various international exhibitions, including at the Venice Biennale (1996) and the Musée du Luxembourg (2006). In 2011, Wou-Ki moved to Switzerland, where he remained until his death on 09.04.2013 (in Nyon). After his passing, his wife set up a foundation to manage his extensive body of work. Wou-Ki's works are part of the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (London), the Museum of Modern Art (New York City) and the Tate Gallery of Modern Art (London).

Influenced by Paul Klee at the beginning of his career, Zao Wou-Ki's style in the 1950s is attributed to Lyrical Abstraction and the Nouvelle École de Paris, and he is still seen as a well-known representative of both art movements. Over time, however, Wou-Ki increasingly moved away from representational, figurative painting and instead turned towards a combination of Chinese calligraphy and European Informel. In his later years, the works of Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline influenced him, which is why his style then resembles abstract expressionism. His poetic, non-representational abstract paintings are large-format, partly dip- and triptychs, and drenched in bright colours.

Der am 13.02.1920 oder 1921 in Peking (China) geborene Maler Zao Wou-Ki erlernte bereits in seiner Kindheit die chinesische Kalligrafie. Schon 1935 begann er sein Studium an der Akademie der Künste in Hangzhou mit den Schwerpunkten chinesische und westliche Malerei. Die Werke von Picasso, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse und Paul Klee beeinflussten ihn dabei nachhaltig. Nach seinem Abschluss arbeitete er von 1941 bis 1947 als Professor an derselben Kunstakademie und stellte seine Gemälde auf einer ersten Einzelschau aus. Von der europäischen Moderne beeindruckt, zog Wou-Ki 1947 nach Paris, wurde dort der Nachbar von Alberto Giacometti und belegte Kurse in Malerei bei Othon Friesz. Ferner pflegte er Kontakte zu Henri Michaux, Joan Miró, Joan Mitchell, Maria Elena Vieira da Silva, Pierre Soulages und Sam Francis.

1949 fand in der Galerie Creuze Wou-Kis erste Pariser Soloexhibition statt, auf die in den folgenden Jahren diverse weitere Ausstellungen in ganz Europa folgten. 1964 erhielt er die französische Staatsbürgerschaft, ein Jahr darauf wurde im Museum Folkwang in Essen seine erste große Retrospektive ausgestellt. Aus mehreren Reisen nach China in den 1970er Jahren entstand eine Reihe von in chinesischer Tradition gehaltenen Tuschmalereien. Daneben brachten ihm die Freundschaften zu Henri Michaux und André Malraux diverse Jobs für Illustrationsprojekte ein. 1983 wurden seine Arbeiten in der Volksrepublik China anerkannt und im Chinesischen Nationalmuseum (Peking) einige seiner Werke ausgestellt.

In den 1990er und 2000er Jahren wurden Wou-Ki mehrere Ehrendoktorate und Auszeichnungen verliehen, darunter der Praemium Imperiale des japanischen Kaiserhauses (1994). Daneben waren seine Gemälde Teil von verschiedenen internationalen Ausstellungen, darunter auf der Biennale in Venedig (1996) und im Musée du Luxembourg (2006). 2011 zog Wou-Ki in die Schweiz, wo er bis zu seinem Tod am 09.04.2013 (in Nyon) ansässig blieb. Nach seinem Ableben gründete seine Frau zur Verwaltung seines umfangreichen Werkes eine Stiftung. Wou-Kis Arbeiten sind Bestandteil der Sammlungen des Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (London), des Museum of Modern Art (New York City) und der Tate Gallery of Modern Art (London).

Zu Beginn seiner Karriere von Paul Klee beeinflusst, wird Zao Wou-Kis Stil in den 1950ern der Lyrischen Abstraktion sowie der Nouvelle École de Paris zugeordnet und er bis heute als bekannter Vertreter beider Kunstrichtungen gesehen. Mit der Zeit entfernte sich Wou-Ki jedoch zunehmend von der gegenständlichen, bildlichen Malerei und wandte sich stattdessen hin zu einer Verbindung von chinesischer Kalligrafie und europäischem Informel. In seinen späteren Jahren beeinflussten ihn die Werke von Jackson Pollock und Franz Kline, weshalb sein Stil dann an den abstrakten Expressionismus erinnert. Seine poetischen, nicht-gegenständlichen, abstrakten Gemälde sind großformatig, zum Teil Dip- und Triptychen, und getränkt in bunten Farben.
