The artist Zao Wou-Ki

  • French-Chinese painter who spent most of his life in Paris.
  • Considered a well-known representative of Lyrical Abstraction and the Nouvelle École de Paris.
  • Combines characteristics of Far Eastern and Western art in his paintings.

Born on 13.02.1920 or 1921 in Beijing (China), the painter Zao Wou-Ki learned Chinese calligraphy in his childhood. As early as 1935, he began his studies at the Academy of Arts in Hangzhou, majoring in Chinese and Western painting. The works of Picasso, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Paul Klee had a lasting influence on him. After graduating, he worked as a professor at the same art academy from 1941 to 1947 and exhibited his paintings at a first solo show. Impressed by European modernism, Wou-Ki moved to Paris in 1947, became Alberto Giacometti's neighbour and took courses in painting with Othon Friesz. He also cultivated contacts with Henri Michaux, Joan Miró, Joan Mitchell, Maria Elena Vieira da Silva, Pierre Soulages and Sam Francis.

In 1949, Wou-Ki's first Paris solo exhibition took place at the Galerie Creuze, followed by various other exhibitions throughout Europe in the years that ensued. In 1964 he was granted French citizenship, and a year later his first major retrospective was shown at the Museum Folkwang in Essen. Several trips to China in the 1970s resulted in a series of ink paintings in the Chinese tradition. In addition, his friendships with Henri Michaux and André Malraux brought him various jobs for illustration projects. In 1983, his work was recognised in the People's Republic of China and some of his works were exhibited in the Chinese National Museum (Beijing).

In the 1990s and 2000s, Wou-Ki was awarded several honorary doctorates and awards, including the Praemium Imperiale of the Imperial House of Japan (1994). Furthermore, his paintings were part of various international exhibitions, including at the Venice Biennale (1996) and the Musée du Luxembourg (2006). In 2011, Wou-Ki moved to Switzerland, where he remained until his death on 09.04.2013 (in Nyon). After his passing, his wife set up a foundation to manage his extensive body of work. Wou-Ki's works are part of the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (London), the Museum of Modern Art (New York City) and the Tate Gallery of Modern Art (London).

Influenced by Paul Klee at the beginning of his career, Zao Wou-Ki's style in the 1950s is attributed to Lyrical Abstraction and the Nouvelle École de Paris, and he is still seen as a well-known representative of both art movements. Over time, however, Wou-Ki increasingly moved away from representational, figurative painting and instead turned towards a combination of Chinese calligraphy and European Informel. In his later years, the works of Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline influenced him, which is why his style then resembles abstract expressionism. His poetic, non-representational abstract paintings are large-format, partly dip- and triptychs, and drenched in bright colours.
