The artist Craigie Aitchison

  • Scottish painter of naïve art.
  • Known for his Crucifixion motif, of which one is placed behind the altar of Liverpool Cathedral.
  • Member of the Royal Academy of Arts since 1978.

Ronald Craigie Aitchison, born 13 January 1926 in Edinburgh, and deceased 21 December 2009 in London, was a Scottish painter who became famous for his colourful canvas paintings. His central subjects include various depictions of the crucifixion of Jesus, dogs, horses, as well as portraits and Italian landscapes. His work is often described with a »mystical quality« and in this respect compared to the styles of Piero della Francesca, Milton Avery and William Blake.

With his simple form of expression and his simple colour scheme, Aitchison is also classified as a naïve painter. Although Aitchison was not a regular churchgoer, the biblical narrative of the crucifixion made a lasting impression on him, as he found it intrinsically »central to the human experience« and regarded it as a still relevant social image. His intention was to reproduce this allegory as a kind of memorial »as long as humanity exists«.

In many paintings, he depicts the Christ figure without arms - as he says, this is because everyone knows who is depicted in the crucifixion subject anyway, so that the the arms are unnecessary. One of his crucifixion works can be found in the chapter house of Liverpool Cathedral. Aitchison first began studying law at the University of Edinburgh, but dropped out;

only then did he turn to art when he attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London. In 1978 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. During his lifetime there were several retrospectives of his work: at the Serpentine Gallery in London (1981), at Harewood House near Leeds (1994) and at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow (1996).

  • Seit 1978 Mitglied der Royal Academy of Arts.
