The artist Henry Moore

  • English sculptor and draughtsman.
  • Known for large-scale, semi-abstract sculptures.
  • Considered an expression of modern humanism.

When Henry Moore received a scholarship to study sculpture at the Leeds School of Art in 1919, he was the first there. The art school first had to set up a studio for this course. Moore, who had been drafted in the First World War, set out on a path that was to make him famous. His parents were against sculpture as they hoped for professions in less physically demanding fields for their children.

Moore was born on 30 July 1898. During his studies he met Barbara Hepworth, they remained friends for many years. Like Hepworth, Moore quickly rejected traditional sculpture. Inspired by African (primarily ancient Egyptian) sculptures, which he studied at the British Museum, and artists such as Constantin Brâncuși, Moore tried to create new kinds of works. He made sculptures from wood and marble without previous models (direct carving). The traces of processing were to remain visible.

A travel grant took Moore to northern Italy for six months in 1924. Here it was above all Michelangelo's sculptures that had a lasting influence on Moore's figurative works.

The »resting figure« was to become the artist's trademark in many different forms. His wife Irina Radetsky often served as his model. From the 1930s Moore lived in London, where he was appointed head of sculpture at the Chelsea School of Art. Hepworth lived nearby with her husband. Both artists worked increasingly abstractly. Surrealist works in particular, which they saw on various trips to Paris, influenced their new formal language.

During the Second World War, Moore received commissions as a war draughtsman. His illustrations of London civilians seeking shelter from bombing raids made him particularly famous in the USA. After his first major exhibition at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1946, Moore received international commissions for large-scale public sculptures. They are considered an expression of modern humanism in the 20th century. The four-time documenta participant (1955, 1959, 1964, 1977) died on 31 August 1986 as one of the best-known sculptors of his generation.
