The artist David Bomberg

  • British painter of the 20th century and representative of Vorticism.
  • Painted in an abstract, angular style that reflected the industrial age.
  • Lived in five different countries after World War I.

David Bomberg was a 20th century British painter, sometimes referred to as a representative of Vorticism. Born in Birmingham in 1890, he first studied art history at the Westminster School of Art in 1908, where he was a student of Walter Sickert. While there, the young art student assisted the portrait painter John Singer Sargent in his studio – the experienced artist encouraged Bomberg to continue his studies at the more prestigious Slade School of Fine Art. He did so thanks to a scholarship from the Jewish Education Aid Society.

Between 1911 and 1913, Bomberg continued his studies there and met other contemporaries such as Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer, Ben Nicholson, Mark Gertler, and Isaac Rosenberg. In 1913, the recent graduate traveled to France with the sculptor Jacob Epstein, who also joined the Vorticist movement. In France, Bomberg met such greats as Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso, who would influence his later work.

World War I forced the artist to take a break, after which he traveled to various countries, settling in for one to four years at a time – he lived in Palestine, Morocco, Greece, Russia, and Spain. Between 1945 and 1953, Bomberg held a teaching position at London's South Bank University, where he taught Frank Auerbach, Leslie Marr, and Leon Kossoff, among others. Bomberg died in London in 1957 at the age of 66.

As a representative of Vorticism, Bomberg stylistically followed a movement from early 20th century England. The style developed parallel to Cubism and Futurism. It was at odds with academic tradition and Impressionism, and sought to make a specifically English contribution to modernism. Vorticism dealt with the modern, mechanical-industrial world, represented hardness as a value that was perceived as masculine at the time, but always moved far away from realistic depictions, abstracting the metropolitan subjects. All representatives of the movement rejected a moral mandate and argued that each work should function autonomously.
