The artist Lin Tianmiao

  • Contemporary Chinese installation artist.
  • Main focus on feminist themes such as normative gender roles.
  • Characteristic technique: thread winding.

Lin Tianmiao, born 1961 in Taiyuan, China, is a contemporary artist who mainly creates installations. Her artworks are always influenced by her feminist mindset. She critically questions social gender stereotypes and normative notions of femininity, beauty and being a mother. Thus, the use of contrasting materials is one of the central features of her art – they represent society's diametrical demands on women. With her installation Boy and Girl (2004), for example, she wants to expose these ideas, whose roots, she says, can be found in normative child-rearing.

Threads often play a role in Tianmiao's installations, which she uses to attach objects or wrap them around. Furthermore, she always uses natural products and materials such as bone, wood, hair, felt or silk. For example, one of her earliest works, The Proliferation of Thread Winding (1995), contained 20,000 thread balls attached with pins to an iron bed frame covered with rice paper. She was influenced in this technique of »Thread Winding« by her own childhood, when she helped her mother with the low-paid work of winding cotton yarn.

By wrapping thread around objects, Tianmiao modifies their shape and thus opens up a completely new way of looking at them. According to Tianmiao, the choice of natural raw materials enables viewers to connect with the physical world and thus experience a physical reality of their own. In addition, working with fabrics allows a step away from the modern, complex world back to a simpler past. Tianmiao studied at the Fine Art Department of the Capital Normal University in Beijing in the 1980s.

After her studies, she moved to New York with her husband, the artist Wang Gongxin. There she worked mainly as a textile designer. In 1995, she returned to China to concentrate on her artistic career. In 2013, the Asia Society Museum in New York held Tianmiao's first solo exhibition in the USA: Bound Unbound. Today, her works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra and the Singapore Art Museum, among others.

Die Künstlerin Lin Tianmiao

  • Zeitgenössische chinesische Installationskünstlerin.
  • Hauptfokus auf feministischen Themen wie normativen Geschlechterrollen.
  • Charakteristische Technik: das Thread Winding.

Lin Tianmiao,  geb.
