The artist William Aiken Walker

  • US genre and portrait painter.
  • Many of his works are classified as Post-Impressionist.
  • His best-known motifs include images of black slave and plantation workers in the USA.

The US genre and portrait painter William Aiken Walker was born on 11 March 1838 in Charleston (South Carolina) and began painting at a young age. At the age of 12, Walker exhibited his first painting at the South Carolina Institute Fair. Ten years later, he is said to have travelled to Europe and to have stayed in Düsseldorf in the course of this.

It was here that he gained an insight into the work of the Düsseldorf School of Painting. Due to the War of Secession, Walker enlisted in the Confederate States Army in 1861. Following a war injury shortly after joining, he worked in a cartography department of the military as a draftsman and resigned from the service in 1864. Walker moved to Baltimore, where he sold small paintings of the »Old South«.

While in the beginning he painted mainly war events and church ruins, he switched to genre painting after the war ended. His recurring motifs included primarily the picturesque depiction of the lives of poor blacks, formerly enslaved plantation and agricultural workers in the Southern states at the time of Reconstruction. The pictures were visibly self-taught and sold well. Hardly any painting tradition was recognisable in them, but an affinity for detail.

From 1868 Walker travelled several times, including Cuba, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Florida. In the latter state, he particularly liked the city of New Orleans, which he visited on many occasions during his life.

It was here that he produced the paintings The Levee at New Orleans (1883) and Southern Cotton Plantation (1884) - both of which were published as chromolithographs by Currier and Ives. Through mass circulation, Walker became known to a wider audience. During his travels he also made a living from street sales of his work, as well as selling to and in galleries. Many of his paintings from this period are classified as Post-Impressionist.  With the beginning of the 1890s, landscape paintings were added increasingly.

In addition to the well-known miniatures, portraits and landscapes, Walker's oeuvre also includes topographical drawings and a series of trompe l'oeil paintings. Walker painted in his native city of Charleston until his death on 3 January 1921.His works were exhibited several times, including at the Louisville Industrial Exhibition (1872, Kentucky), the Boston Art Club (1881, Massachusetts), the World's Columbian Exposition (1893, Chicago/Illinois) and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904, St. Louis/Missouri).

William Aiken Walker in a nutshell

In 1850, Walker attended the South Carolina Institute Fair, where he presented his first solo exhibition. He was 11 years old at the time.

Walker made a name for himself in Baltimore and several Southern cities after the Civil War, selling small paintings and painted postcards to tourists. His breakthrough, to use a modern term, came when, beginning in 1884, Currier and Ives published lithographs of his large paintings. Since then, Walker has been in demand as a portraitist for wealthy Southerners, among others.

Walker had the ability to authentically portray the landscapes, people, and culture of the American South. Having been born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Walker had an intimate understanding of the region's distinct character and charm. His paintings depict scenes of cotton plantations, rural life, African American workers, and landscapes that evoke the ambiance of the southern states during the post-Civil War era. Walker's attention to detail and his careful observation of daily life in the South contribute to the authenticity and historical accuracy of his paintings.

Walker's paintings captivate viewers with their luminous use of light and color. He skillfully employed a soft, muted color palette that evokes the gentle warmth of southern sunlight. His mastery of light allowed him to create a sense of depth and atmosphere within his compositions, infusing them with a serene and nostalgic quality. Through delicate brushwork and subtle tonal variations, Walker's paintings come alive, enveloping viewers in a sense of time and place.

Unlike many artists of his time, Walker depicted African Americans not as caricatures or stereotypes but as dignified individuals with their own stories and experiences. His paintings portray scenes of labor, family life, and leisure, offering a nuanced and empathetic glimpse into the African American community of the time. Walker's compassionate portrayal of African Americans contributes to the historical significance and social commentary embedded in his art. Walker's paintings document the social dynamics of the region, providing insight into a pivotal era of American history. His meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to preserving the essence of the South contribute to the enduring cultural and historical value of his paintings.

At auction, most paintings fetch prices between $1,000 and $50,000. This is partly due to the small formats and the period. Walker painted in the United States in the mid and late 19th century. European painters are more in demand in today's market, especially in modern styles from 1900 onward, but some of Walker's paintings fetched higher prices between $100,000 and $500,000. His Big B Cotton Plantation of 1881 even fetched nearly $650,000 at a Christie's auction in 2017. There was then a small peak period in which Walker was offered more frequently at auction, but as of 2021 this is again very rare.

Walker died in 1921 in his native Charleston, South Carolina. He is buried there in Magnolia Cemetery in a family plot.

Works by Walker are held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Yale University Art Gallery, Virginia Museum of Fine Art, High Museum of Art, Parrish Art Museum, Morris Museum of Art, and Historic New Orleans Collection.

Walker verstarb 1921 in seiner Geburtsstadt Charleston, South Carolina.

William Aiken Walker quotes

»I am like the machine: I paint and repaint these subjects so that many can share the feelings I have for this magnificent world of ours. Art is not only for the artist, it is for all and I shall do my best to see that all can afford it, to the extent that I shall paint and paint and paint until the brush runs dry.«
