Auction result well in line with expectations
The work A view in Calcutta, thought to be the South Park Street Cemetery by C. J. Martin was sold in the Travel & Exploration Sale auction at Bonhams in London in June this year. The price achieved of GBP 12,800.00 (€ 14,897.00) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 10,000.00 – 15,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by C. J. Martin - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A group of merchants on a lawn, Rio de Janeiro, a glimpse of Corcovado beyond, which sold at auction in October 2014 for GBP 25,000.00 (€ 31,921.39).
