La presente composizione si pone in relazione con la pala relativamente giovanile di Carlo Francesco in Sant'Agostino a Como per la simile posa del San Giuseppe. L'opera in esame viene, infatti, citata e commentata nella scheda del dipinto di Como (Ferro 2003, p. 122), nella quale si legge: "La figura di San Giuseppe appare simile in una tavoletta di dolce colore" (con riferimento all'asta Finarte).
Si tratta di un modello che circola nella bottega dei Nuvolone e che Giuseppe reinterpreta successivamente in un dipinto di analogo soggetto (collezione privata) che traduce in controparte e in un formato più monumentale l'invenzione di questa piccola tavola (Ferro 2003, fig. 56).

This work of art by Carlo Francesco Nuvolone could be acquired at Il Ponte in October 2021 for an unexpectedly low price. In the Furniture and Old Master Paintings, Silver, Clocks, Musical Instruments, Historia, Carpets and Textiles, Old Master Drawings and Prints auction, the work The dream of Saint Joseph changed hands for EUR 3,800.00 - missing the lower end of the estimate range of EUR 4,000.00 – 4,500.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Carlo Francesco Nuvolone achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Lot And His Daughters; Neptune And Amphitrite in January 2014 with an auction result of USD 68,750.00 (€ 50,925.93).
Auktionsergebnis verfehlt die Schätzpreisspanne

In der Auktion Furniture and Old Master Paintings, Silver, Clocks, Musical Instruments, Historia, Carpets and Textiles, Old Master Drawings and Prints wechselte die Arbeit The dream of Saint Joseph für EUR 3.800,00 den Besitzer – und verfehlte damit das untere Ende der Schätzpreisspanne von EUR 4.000,00 – 4.500,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Carlo Francesco Nuvolone erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Lot And His Daughters; Neptune And Amphitrite im Januar 2014 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 68.750,00 (€ 50.925,93).
