This artwork by John Stobart achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in January 2020. In the Important American Furniture, Folk Art and Silver auction, the work South Street, New York, in 1880 sold for USD 40,000.00 (€ 36,058.78) - well above the upper estimate of USD 15,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by John Stobart; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot The Charles W. Morgan in company with the bark Janet of New Bedford and other whaling ships north of the Bering Straits sold at auction in February 2005 with the realized price of USD 90,000.00 (€ 67,801.72).
