Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
When the work Beach Scene with boats and figures by Joseph Mallord William Turner was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in January last year, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 20,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than four times as high at USD 94,500.00 (€ 84,284.69). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Joseph Mallord William Turner achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Rome, From Mount Aventine in December 2014 with an auction result of GBP 30,322,500.00 (€ 39,035,113.21).
