Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Portrait of a gentleman in blue, three-quarter-length; and Portrait of a lady in blue, three-quarter-length by Nicolaes Maes was auctioned at Christies in London in December 2016. It changed hands for a price of GBP 32,500.00 (€ 37,997.77) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 25,000.00 – 35,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Nicolaes Maes achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Group portrait of a family in an Italianate garden with an ornate fountain in December 2005 with an auction result of GBP 792,000.00 (€ 1,149,543.66).
