Verso auf dem Keilrahmen zwei alte Klebezettel mit handschriftlicher Bezeichnung: “The original Portrait of The Emperor Napoleon painted by Robert Lefevre, in the uniform of Colonel of Chasseurs à Cheval of the Imperial Guard, his favourite costume and wearing the Cordon Grand Cross, and their Cross of the Legion of Honor [sic!], and of the Iron Crown, was presented by the Emperor Napoleon to Doctor Bourdier, First Physician to the Empress Marie Louise, on the occasion of the Birth of the King of Rome.”
Die ursprüngliche Version des vorliegenden Portraits war ein Geschenk Napoleons an den Arzt Bourdier anlässlich der Geburt von Francois Joseph Charles Bonaparte, dem Sohn Napoleons und seiner Gemahlin Marie Louise von Habsburg, der den Titel eines Königs von Rom trug. Die Geburt seines Sohnes erfolgte am 20. März 1811; zu diesem Zeitpunkt war Napoleon auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Macht und beherrschte ein Gebiet das von Barcelona bis Hamburg, Danzig und Dubrovnik reichte und nicht weniger als 70 Millionen Einwohner umfasste.
