Artist's Statement
Mayahuel is the female deity associated with the Maguey plant among cultures of central Mexico. As the personification of the maguey plant, Mayahuel is also a maternal and fertility goddess. She nourishes the living beings with the milk of the maguey when fermented produces an ecstatic inebriation, which her helpers, the 400 rabbits, take for a mystical experience.
Artwork and artist connected through the generous efforts of Nueve Arte Urbano.
The current lot was created by Tania Quezada, curated by Nueve Arte Urbano, and donated by Amigos del Museo de Arte de Querétaro.

In October 2021 Sothebys in New York held the auction Boundless Space… The Possibilities of Burning Man, which included the work Mayahuel dreams about rabbits by Tania Quezada. The »bidding war« ended at USD 2,772.00 (€ 2,399.58), 39% above the upper estimate. Other works by Tania Quezada have achieved even higher prices, we observed the highest auction result so far of USD 3,150.00 (€ 2,726.80) in October 2021 for the work Flores de caos y desierto (Flowers of chaos and desert).
