When the work Osaka Tenpozan (Mount Tenpo, Osaka), From The Series Honcho Meisho (Famous Places Of The Country Japan) by Utagawa Hiroshige was auctioned at Christies in New York in April 2018, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 3,500.00 but the actual price achieved was more than seven times as high at USD 27,500.00 (€ 22,776.21). Admittedly, works by Utagawa Hiroshige have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi (The fifty-three stations of the Tokaido) in September 2002 with an auction result of USD 207,500.00 (€ 210,041.50).
