Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Utagawa Kuniyoshi achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in December 2021. In the Fine Japanese Prints auction, the work The ghost of Asakura Togo haunting those who ordered his crucifixion sold for GBP 3,276.00 (€ 3,907.58) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 1,500.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Utagawa Kuniyoshi achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Mitsukuni Defying The Skeleton Spectre Conjured Up By Princess Takiyasha (Souma No Furudairi Yokai Ga Shadokuro To Tatakau Oya Notarou Mitsukuni) in November 2019 with an auction result of GBP 200,000.00 (€ 234,848.90).
