Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work The actors Sawamura Sojuro III and Bando Hikosaburo III in the roles of Prince Koretaka (Koretaka Shinno) and Bando Taro performing in the play Gin Sekai Matsu ni Yukihira at the Kiri-za Theatre by Utagawa Toyokuni was auctioned at Sothebys in London in December 2021, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 10,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 30,240.00 (€ Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Utagawa Toyokuni; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Edo Period (1615-1868), Early 19Th Century sold at auction in September 2021 with the realized price of USD 44,062.50 (€ 38,060.38).
