VALENTINE WALTER BROMLEY (1848-1877) 'The De'il awa wi the Exciseman' signed and dated 'Valentine W. Bromley/ 1870.' (lower right) and inscribed 'The De'il cam fiddling thro' the town/ and danced aw'a wi the Exciseman/ And ilka wife cries "Auld Matma/ I wish you luck o the purge man"/ Burns/ painted by/ Valentine W. Bromley/ no 6749.' (on a label on the reverse) pencil, watercolour and bodycolour heightened with gum arabic on paper 11 1 ⁄ 4 x 19 1 ⁄ 4 in. (28.5 x 48.9 cm.)

This artwork by Valentine Walter Bromley achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in July last year. In the The Isabel Goldsmith Collection: Selected Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist Art auction, the work 'The De'il awa wi the Exciseman' sold for GBP 3,024.00 (€ 3,611.19) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 1,500.00. Admittedly, works by Valentine Walter Bromley have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Flora in December 2014 with an auction result of GBP 15,000.00 (€ 19,309.97).
Oberer Schätzpreis um mehr als 100% übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Valentine Walter Bromley erzielte im Juli letzten Jahres bei Christies in London einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion The Isabel Goldsmith Collection: Selected Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist Art wurde die Arbeit 'The De'il awa wi the Exciseman' für GBP 3.024,00 (€ 3.611,19) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von GBP 1.500,00. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Valentine Walter Bromley auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Flora im Dezember 2014 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 15.000,00 (€ 19.309,97).
