The illustrator Hajime Sorayama was born on 22.02.1947 in Imabari, Japan, and developed a passion for drawing as a child. Technical details in particular aroused his interest. Nevertheless, he decided to study English literature and Greek in 1965. Two years later he dropped out and took up studies at the Chuo Art School in Tokyo instead. After graduating in 1969, he worked as an illustrator for an advertising agency in Tokyo and decided to become a freelance artist in 1971.
His interest in the artistic representation of technology has remained until today, and Sorayama's works combine art, illustration, industrial design and biomechanics. His art is classified as hyperrealism (also known as superrealism), whereby particularly his realistic portrayal of light effects is repeatedly given special attention. However, Sorayama is primarily known for his precise depiction of female-designed robots and biomechanoids. His art also includes many illustrations of women in lacquer, in riding costumes or as dominatrixes. The majority of his work has a clear erotic connotation.
His book Sexy Robot, which was published in 1983 and depicts shiny chrome robot women in an often sexualised manner, achieved great fame. In 1988, his work was presented for the first time in a solo exhibition at the Seibu Department Store Gallery (Hakodate, Japan). In the following years, he had many more solo and group exhibitions, mainly in Japan, China, Taiwan, the USA as well as in Germany and Italy.
Sorayama illustrated covers for various magazines and his pin-up work was featured on a monthly basis for years in the erotic magazine Penthouse. He also worked with various filmmakers on fantasy and science fiction projects in Hollywood. Furthermore he had collaborations with brands such as British Knights, Medicom Toy and X-LARGE® and was significantly involved in the design of the Sony AIBO, a robot dog of the Sony brand. Today, Hajime Sorayama lives and works in Tokyo.

Der Illustrator Hajime Sorayama wurde am 22.02.1947 Imabari, Japan, geboren und entwickelte bereits in der Kindheit eine Leidenschaft fürs Zeichnen. Vor allem technische Details erregten dabei sein Interesse. Trotzdem entschied er sich 1965 für ein Studium in englischer Literatur und Griechisch. Dies brach er zwei Jahre später ab und nahm stattdessen ein Studium an der Chuo-Kunstschule in Tokio auf. Nach seinem Abschluss 1969 war er als Illustrator bei einer Werbeagentur in Tokio tätig und entschied sich 1971 dazu, sich selbstständig zu machen.
Bis heute ist das Interesse an der künstlerischen Darstellung von Technik geblieben und so vereinen Sorayamas Werke in sich Kunst, Illustration, Industriedesign und Biomechanik. Seine Kunst wird dem Hyperrealismus (auch Superrealismus genannt) zugeordnet und ihm wird eine besonders realistische Darstellung von Lichteffekten nachgesagt. Bekannt ist Sorayama aber vor allem für die präzise Darstellung von feminin gestalteten Robotern und Biomechanoiden. Seine Kunst umfasst zudem auch viele Illustrationen von Frauen in Lack, im Reitkostüm oder als Domina. Dem Großteil seiner Werke liegt dabei Erotik zugrunde.
Sein bis dato berühmtestes Werk ist das Buch „Sexy Robot“, welches 1983 veröffentlicht wurde und in oft sexualisierter Weise chromglänzende Roboterfrauen abbildet. 1988 wurden seine Arbeiten zum ersten Mal in der Seibu Department Store Gallery (Hakodate, Japan) in einer Einzelausstellung dargeboten. In den folgenden Jahren kamen viele weitere Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen, vornehmlich in Japan, China, Taiwan, in den USA und vereinzelt auch in Deutschland sowie Italien, hinzu.
Sorayama illustrierte Titelseiten für diverse Zeitschriften und seine Pin-up-Arbeiten waren über Jahre monatlich im Erotikmagazin Penthouse zu sehen. Er arbeitete zudem mit verschiedenen Filmschaffenden an Fantasy- und Science-Fiction-Projekten in Hollywood. Darüber hinaus hatte er Kooperationen mit Marken wie British Knights, Medicom Toy und X-LARGE® und war maßgeblich am Design des Sony AIBO, einem Roboterhund der Marke Sony, beteiligt. Heute lebt und arbeitet Hajime Sorayama in Tokio.
