The artist Takashi Murakami

  • Contemporary Japanese artist of Pop Art.
  • Describes his art as Superflat - and founded an art movement with the same name in 1990.
  • His best-known works include the sculpture »My Lonesome Cowboy«.

Takashi Murakami, born on 01.02.1962 in Tokyo, Japan, is a Japanese painter, sculptor and designer. He studied traditional Japanese Nihonga painting at the Tokyo University of the Arts and graduated with a doctorate. In 1994, Murakami received a scholarship from the Asian Cultural Council and moved to New York City for a year to participate in MoMA PS1's international studio programme. During this time, he engaged with Western artists such as Anselm Kiefer and the simulationism of artists such as Jeff Koons. In 1998, he created his famous sculpture My Lonesome Cowboy - a naked anime figure with a blond hedgehog hairdo ejaculating a spiral trail of semen around himself. It is the counterpart to his 1997 sculpture Hiropon, also an anime-inspired figure with streams of breast milk flowing from its nipples. Both works reveal Murakami's love of otaku subculture and are associated with Superflat Art, an art movement he himself founded in the 1990s to criticise Japanese consumer culture.

In 2000, he published his Superflat Theory in the catalogue for the group exhibition Superflat. A year later he founded the company Kaikai Kiki Co., under which he mainly produces and markets his own art objects, but also merchandise and animated films, and represents young artists. In 2002, Murakami collaborated with the high-fashion label Louis Vuitton and designed handbags with cherry blossom decoration, which made him famous worldwide. This was followed by collaborations with pop culture icons, including US rapper Kanye West, whose CD cover he designed for the single Stronger and the album Graduation.

In 2008, his sculpture My Lonesome Cowboy was sold at auction at Sotheby's for 13.5 million US dollars. In his works, Murakami combines classical Japanese art with contemporary pop culture and is thus considered a border crosser between art, design, popular culture and commerce. His work is therefore often compared to pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons.

His pieces are very graphic and characterised by bright colours. Laughing flowers, mushrooms, skulls and cartoonesque figures are recurring motifs. While at first glance usually appearing playful to psychedelic, on closer inspection his pictures often reveal socio-critical ideas. With the term Superflat, which he created, he refers, among other things, to the lack of perspective and depth in his pictures.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo) in 2001, at the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) also in 2001, and at the Serpentine Gallery in London in 2002. From 2007 to 2009, his first retrospective was exhibited successively at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), the Brooklyn Museum of Art (New York), the Museum für Moderne Kunst (Frankfurt) and the Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao). Murakami currently lives and works in Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles.
