Herb Ritts, born 13 August 1952 in Los Angeles, died 26 December 2002 there, was an American photographer and music video director. Ritts' photographic work focused mainly on black and white photographs of fashion and music. One of his best-known works is a portrait of a young, muscular man against the backdrop of a car repair shop: Fred with Tires (1984). In addition to his creative focus on fashion photography, Ritts also portrayed people such as Kofi Annan, Cindy Crawford, the Dalai Lama, Sir Elton John, Jack Nicholson or Elizabeth Taylor in an unconventional way and in unusual situations.
His oeuvre also includes collaborations with world-famous pop icons such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake and Shakira. For example, he designed the cover of Madonna's album True Blue and directed the video for her song Cherish. Ritts is regarded as a self-taught artist who only continued his education through occasional courses.
His friendship with actor Richard Gere more or less helped him achieve success - a snapshot of Gere resting at a petrol station first drew attention to Ritts' work and can be seen as the start of his career. Soon after, his photographs graced the covers of various renowned (fashion) magazines - among them were Harper's Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair as well as Vogue.
Shortly before his death, he shot the video for the pop song Underneath your Clothes for singer Shakira and produced photo series with pop star Justin Timberlake and actor Ben Affleck. On 26 December 2002, he succumbed to the consequences of severe pneumonia - he was 50 years old. The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston was the first art house to dedicate a solo exhibition to him in 1996. After Ritt's death, the Herb Ritts Foundation presented the museum with 189 photographs from his estate and a donation of 2.5 million US dollars. The museum then set up a permanent exhibition of Ritt's work (Herb Ritts Gallery for Photography).

Seine Freundschaft zum Schauspieler Richard Gere verhalf ihm mehr oder minder zum Erfolg – ein Schnappschuss von Gere bei der Rast an einer Tankstelle lenkte erstmalig die Aufmerksamkeit auf Ritts Arbeit und kann als Beginn seiner Karriere gesehen werden. Bald darauf zierten seine Aufnahmen die Cover verschiedener renommierter (Mode-)Magazine – darunter befanden sich die Harper’s Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair sowie die Vogue.
Kurz vor seinem Tod drehte er das Video zum Pop-Song Underneath your Clothes für Sängerin Shakira und fertigte Fotoserien mit Popstar Justin Timberlake und Schauspieler Ben Affleck. Am 26.12.2002 erlag er den Folgen einer schweren Lungenentzündung – er wurde 50 Jahre alt. Das Museum of Fine Arts in Boston war das erste Kunsthaus, das ihm 1996 eine Einzelausstellung widmete. Selbigem überreichte die Herb Ritts Foundation nach Ritts Tod 189 Fotografien aus dessen Nachlass sowie eine 2,5-Millionen-US-Dollar-Spende. Daraufhin richtete das Museum eine Dauerausstellung mit Ritts Arbeiten ein (Herb Ritts Gallery for Photography).
