Irma Blank is a German-Italian painter and graphic artist. She was born in Celle, Germany in 1934 and today lives in Milan. Blank's main focus has been on writing since the 1950s, when she emigrated to Italy: she transforms language into graphics and paintings. In this way, she draws attention to the semantics that underlie not only the content of the written word, but also the body of writing itself.
Blank's art explores the connection between writing and the physical act that was once needed for writing. She thus brings the performative aspect, the pictorial-physical power of writing, back into the immaterial-digital age.
In the 1970s, when she collaborated with the Italian poet Mirella Bentivoglio, she also incorporated concrete poetry into her work. In 1973, with her move to her current adopted home of Milan, she created her Trascrizioni (Engl.: sketches) of large newspaper double-page spreads.
By the end of the decade, she had made it to the biggest stages: in 1977 she participated in documenta 6, and in 1978 she was represented at the Venice Biennale. In the early 1980s, Blank also started with performances: she transferred vowel-consonant structures into melodic readings. With her Radical Writings, she then also gives meaning to breath in visual form.
Only a short time later, after the death of her husband, Blank oriented herself towards large-format canvases: the 1980s and 90s were characterized by paintings of blue and pink lines, to which she was led by her own breathing movements. To the present day, many other presentations of her work have followed in renowned museums - such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris (2010) and the MAMbo Bologna (2016).

In den frühen 1980er Jahren beginnt Blank auch mit Performances: Sie überträgt Vokal-Konsonanten-Gebilde in melodiöse Lesungen. Mit ihren Radical Writings lässt sie dem Atem dann auch in visueller Form eine Bedeutung zukommen.
Nur kurze Zeit später, nach dem Tod ihres Mannes, orientierte Blank sich in Richtung großformatiger Leinwände: Die 1980er und -90er Jahre waren geprägt von Gemälden aus blauen und rosafarbenen Linien, zu denen sie sich von ihren eigenen Atembewegungen verleiten ließ. Bis heute folgten viele weitere Präsentationen ihrer Arbeiten in namhaften Museen – darunter das Centre Pompidou in Paris (2010) und das MAMbo Bologna (2016).
