The artist Andy Warhol

  • Leading figure of US Pop Art.
  • Created an important meeting place for renowned pop-cultural personalities with his Factory.
  • Survived a gun assassination.

Andy Warhol, born on 6 August 1928 as Andrej/Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died on 22 February 1987 in New York City, is considered the most important representative and leading figure of Pop Art. As son of immigrants from Slovakia, he embodied the ethos of the »American Dream« due to his later success. Before he became famous, he worked as a window dresser and studied pictorial design, art history, sociology and psychology at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh.

In addition to his work as a visual artist, he was also successful as an illustrator, graphic designer and music and film producer. His career began in 1950 with the publication of a number of drawings in the magazine Mademoiselle, which he already signed with his artist name Andy Warhol. At this time, he also developed a technique that was a predecessor of his later silkscreen technique: Drop and Dripping. Some of his best-known subjects are the Campbell's Soup Cans (1962), the banana on the LP cover of the debut album by the band The Velvet Underground (1967) as well as the alienated portraits of personalities such as Marylin Monroe (1967) or Elizabeth Taylor (1963).

Some of his works were less harmless than the soup cans: for instance, he caused a stir with his depictions of car accidents and similarly morbid scenes in his Death and Disaster series. A recurring topic in his works is the simple reproducibility - Warhol himself also started out by copying depictions from pop culture. Warhol's paintings and silkscreens are characterised by the strong, opaque colouring he often achieved with acrylic. In addition, his portfolio includes the repeated depiction of various objects and people in alienated colours.

His Factory, an old factory building that functioned as a studio, film studio and party location, was the most important place where he created his works and also a place for rehearsals and networking. On 3 June 1968, he survived an assassination attempted by radical feminist Valerie Solanas. As one of the most popular artists of his generation, he died unexpectedly in 1987 after an operation at the age of 58.
