The artist Alighiero Boetti

  • Italian painter and conceptual artist, one of the leading figures of Arte Povera.
  • Traveled to Afghanistan annually until 1979 and commissioned his »Map of the World« there.
  • Had interdisciplinary interests and was largely self-taught.

Italian painter, printmaker, and conceptual artist Alighiero Boetti had a profound influence on the Arte Povera movement that emerged in the 1960s and '70s. Born on December 16, 1940 in Turin, Italy, Boetti pursued his artistic path against a backdrop of political and social change. At a young age, Boetti became interested in the history of his early ancestor, Giovanni Battista Boetti (1743 - 1798), a Dominican missionary in present-day Iraq, where he became known as Al-Masur (English: The Victor).

Boetti must have been aware of his artistic inclinations during his studies in economics: he abandoned them in 1955 and relied on his self-taught skills as an artist. Boetti's artistic curiosity spanned several disciplines. He was attracted to various writers, especially Hermann Hesse. At the same time, he was fascinated by artists such as Jean Dubuffet and André Malraux's Imaginary Museum, as well as the Art Informel and Tachism of the time. The lyrical abstraction of Nicolas de Staël and the work of the sinologist Marcel Granet aroused Boetti's curiosity.

Between 1963 and 1964, Boetti lived in Paris, where he studied with the printmaker and etcher Johnny Friedlaender. This study trip resulted in a series of etchings that led to his first solo exhibition in Turin in 1967. The desire to work more with industrial materials led him to the branch of Arte Povera.

For his conceptual art, Boetti used mainly building materials from the economic boom and was best able to warm to the bright colors of car paints. The movement began with the exhibition Arte povera e IM spazio (1967) at the Galleria La Bertesca in Genoa, while Arte Povera + Azioni Povere (Actions for the Poor) in the rooms of the old Arsenal in Amalfi marked the high point of Arte Povera.

In 1971, Boetti discovered Kabul for himself and traveled to the Afghan capital at least twice a year until 1979, when the Soviet army invaded. Many of his works from this period are influenced by Afghan culture. In 1989, Boetti commissioned Kabul-based artisans to create Map of the World, an embroidered map depicting the Afghan view of political boundaries at the time.

Beginning in the mid-1970s, he acted as the fictional artist duo Alighiero e Boetti to give space to thematic counterparts. From time to time he also collaborated with other, sometimes non-artistic people. Boetti was represented at documenta 5 in 1972 and documenta 7 in 1982. Boetti died of a brain tumor in 1994 at the age of 53. He is still considered one of the most important representatives of Arte Povera.
